Packaging and hand in

Here is an image of the final product, Mae Magazine!:

I'm so happy with the quality and the way it's turned out!

Also,Last night I covered the lid of a box I bought for my magazine to be placed in with my logo:

I wanted to do this as I feel it will look high quality when submitting to uni. I also wanted it to be presented as it would be to a client in the industry. I also sprayed the box with a black gloss enamel to give it a crisp, polished look.

Finally to submit I placed the box in a delivery parcel with a sticker of my Logo on the front. I am so pleased with how this project has gone and how I have dealt with the highs and lows of the production. I feel Mae Magazine is a strong representation of Mae Management and show cases the models in a suitable high fashion manner that is competitively placed within the fashion industry.

Final Layouts

I have been going through my final layouts in InDesign this week tweaking images and text.

I have come to the decision that I want to have the polaroid shots and a main head shot on the first double page spread for each girl.

Here is a copy of Diandra's main spread I have been working on:

I want to create a strong contrast between the natural images and  the profesionally shot ones. By having them opposite each other in this way I feel that is achieved successfully.

I have also played around with the Model Name on the head shot, Instead of having the inital paint mark with the name over it in small font I felt it needed to stand out more as the magazine is only going to be A5.

Images that have been taken in Landscape have also been considererd further and I want to use them across a full double page for each model. Each of these double spreads will have the model's measurements and information on for the client to view but not in the typical way of seeing it on the first page.

I have also perfected the Agency's ethos:

"Mae Management is an elite modelling agency based in the heart
of London that represents and nurtures budding new talent
within the fashion and beauty industries.
Welcome to the first issue of Mae’s Magazine. The only agency
in the UK to create a monthly publication of high fashion editorial
imagery featuring our newest faces and creative talent. Each
month we will introduce you to ten girls through a sample of
their portfolio, and behind the scenes shots, and interviews with
emerging creatives.
Mae’s Magazine offer our clients a snapshot into the personalities
of our models, and access to the newest faces in London."

This will be on the first right hand page when opening the magazine along with my signature underneath to add a sense of personalism.

Considering my Logo, I feel it is necessary to have two different ones now, One being "Mae Management" for the agency itself and the other "Mae Magazine" for the front cover of the publication.

Here is my final cover shot featuring Diandra:

The logo will be placed above Diandra's head in White.

Shoot: Diandra-final outcome

I recently shot Diandra Lopon, The next model to feature in my agency magazine. The looks were shot in the studio at uni and my photographer was Caroline Raymond (also one of the models for my agency.)

The looks all went as planned and the styling and hair and makeup  combined were successful.

For the first look I planned to shoot Diandra in Cream under wear and heels. I think the contrast between her skin colour and the underwear would look stunning in a black and white shot. After shooting the first look I was really pleased with the outcome but after finishing all three I felt that the first images weren't as strong as the others and don't think I will use them in her profile. The other looks relate to each other more and form more of an editorial story for the magazine.

Makeup and hair was successful for the looks also, and posed a bold and flawless complexion for Diandra.

The strong liner flick on Diandra's eyes really added to the androgynous feel of the shoot, it was effective yet still simple and structured. Also the gloss plum lip really complimented the brown shadow I used in the crease of her eyelid.

Here are a couple of sneek preview shots of the final images:

I feel like this shoot was really well shot and I loved the lighting Caroline created. I am considering using one of the shots from this shoot as the cover of 'Mae Management'.

Model Shoot planning: Diandra

My next shoot for the agency was with a good friend of mine, Diandra Lopon. Although she is below the standard measurements for a model I feel she has a strong face and will work well infront of the camera. I really want to make this shoot a bold editoral aswell as natural in some shots.

Key words for styling:

-Strong
-Clashing prints
-Bold
- sharp
-Slick
-Androgynous

Key words for makeup and hair:

-Flawless skin
- sleek hair
- thick bold liner
- Moody lip

I want this shoot with Diandra to be very bold and high fashion. I have also looked into styling with some black and white pieces and am considering altering a few of the final images into black and white also. I think it will look really effective given the whole look and Diandra's skin tone.

One piece I have bought for the shoot is this swim suit from Topshop:

I am really looking forward to this shoot and have high hopes of the outcomes.

Model shoot:Nadine

This week I was lucky enough to shoot with Model, Nadine Mendes. Nadine is a model currently working with Leni's model management but I managed to get her for a test shoot and am able to use her images in my magazine.

A fellow student Lora Foulsham is creating a look book for a designer for her Final Major Project and wanted to use Nadine for this particular collection. Along side this Lora also styled some of her own looks that she wanted to shoot and this of course meant that it would be a good collaboration for both of us if we worked together on the day. We were originally going to use a model I found at university but as it was a big shoot we chose to get a girl already with experience.

The makeup and hair for the shoot was fairly straight forward. The designer, Sarina Mantle had created a collection that was very vibrant and tribal so I thought a bright lip to coincide with the pieces would fit really well:

The images from the shoot were fantastic and I don't think the day could have gone better. Nadine was an excellent model and a great addition to Mae's.

Model shoot: Jess Turner

The next shoot for my magazine is with a model named jess Turner. jess attends Solent university and is also signed with a modelling agency in London. I was hoping the images would be really good as she has had some experience from working with them.

I was excited to work with Jess as she has similar looks to Lily Cole (I think). She also looks slightly different to the other girls in the agency so her presence and profile will add another element of diversity to the publication.

For this shoot I wanted to take advantage of Jess's pale complexion and blonde hair and build my hair/makeup ideas from that.

Key words for makeup:

- Contour
-Blending
- Glowing
- smoky

and hair:

-back combed
-wet roots
-fierce
-untamed

As a model I feel Jess could be good for a more commercial side of work as well as editorial. For example I feel she would fit well into high street brands such as; Miss Guided, Boohoo, Topshop etc. So I wanted to make sure I featured a look within her portfolio that promoted this aswell as high fashion. I decided for one of the looks to style her in casual summer clothes and accessories and make that part of the shoot really fun and bubbly and hopefully it would portray in the imagery:

I think this look worked well for it's purpose and adds a really good dimension to Jess's portfolio.

The third look was my favourite out of all with Jess,I chose to do a very sleek and smart outfit that would elongate her body in the images. I also used the makeup techniques mentioned earlier, strong blended contour mixed with a pale skin and luminous radiance:

I love this shot of Jess and and strongly considering using it as her profile image. It is striking and will be a goos contrast to her polaroid images.

Model Shoot: Amelia

There is another model I wish to use within my agency who is based in my home town in north wales. I used her as a model in a shoot a couple of years ago and loved the images so I asked her to travel to Southampton to model for my magazine. However Amelia could not make the shoot as she had to have a last minute operation so I was left a bit lost. I then decided to use the images I have of her already but make her profile slightly smaller than the rest of the girls.

My favourite shot of Amelia is:

I think this is such a beautiful crop. Even though it is a shame I won't get to re shoot her I am happy with the images available and feel they are of the standard I require.

New model Shoot: Fleur

Recently I have been searching on Model Mayhem for models and came across Fleur Gascoigne's profile. Fleur is a 17 year old student based in Fareham. I was really keen to approach her to model for my agency as she has a very strong and distinctive look about her and as she is mixed race, would add some diversity to my agency. Her profile picture on the site was what first struck me:

This is an image a college photography student took of her a little while back. She has never modelled for much more than this and I could tell from this image that she would be good infront of the camera, I just hoped she had the confidence to go along side it.

I contacted Fleur and she agreed to model for me. I then started to plan the looks for my shoot and the styling, keeping to the same structure of three different looks for the shoot. Fleur was rather difficult to buy for as she is a very small size six or a size four in clothes. I had to work with this as best as I could and managed to find some really good pieces that would not only fit her but compliment her also.

The shoot was shot in a studio at university by a good friend and fellow student Hannah Farrell. Once fleur arrived we got started on the makeup. For the first look I wanted to just go for some thing natural and simple to compliment her skin tone. As she is quite young and also looks it, I kept the makeup for the other two looks quite simple, I just added a striking red lip for some shots and bright purple for others. I wanted a statement look for the styling chosen but nothing too dramatic on the eyes.

As the shoot went on it improved by the minute and Fleur was producing some amazing shots. She became very comfortable infront of the camera and oozed confidence.

I am really happy with the images produced from this shoot and am really looking forward to laying them out in InDesign for Fleur's profile. I feel the shoot over all was very successful and well planned out, making it much smoother to shoot. If I was to re shoot Fleur at some point I would love to take a wider variety of beauty shots, perhaps to add to her portfolio as an aspiring model.

Layout updates

Over easter I have been Placing my images into my InDesign layouts more and experimenting with composition of images.

I decided to change the first page of each model's profile. At first I had the model's head shot image as the first introducing image and then another one on the opposite page, usually full length. I have now changed my mind and decided to have four small polaroid shots on the facing page to the head shot. I feel like this will present the client with a first hand comparison of how the model looks naturally and also how she looks when made up.It will give a fast view of the model and show her diversity and adaptability when shooting.

I have also started on some of the other girl's profiles such as Hettie. Here is a copy of the first double page of her profile:

I have tried to keep the layout fairly simple as I don't want to distract too much from the images with graphics and text. I am really happy with my choice of head shot as it is a complete extreme to the polaroids and I think they contrast really well side by side. The polaroids however aren't the best. I don't mind the close ups but I am considering re shooting the full length ones as I would prefer to have a solid white back ground,I feel they don't look professional enough yet.

Also for each model I have decided that I am going to include a story in each profile, so that each model looks like they have had a published editorial even if they are all advertised as the new faces in the industry.

I have started experimenting with this in Alexa's profile:

I feel like this editorial is still missing something but I will  keep working on it and am going to add some text to it also, possibly an interview with Alexa or with the photographer. I am unsure yet.

I also want to start adding my own sketches and drawings into the magazine. For example I was thinking of roughly sketching up some flowers in white ink on black paper and adding them to the images of Hettie for editorial:

I havent't decided on the name for this story yet but I would like to add the flowers down the side of the first page, maybe on the right of hettie going onto the start of the other page. There will be further experimentation with this later on in my journal.

I am happy with how the magazine is coming together and am really enjoying placing all the images together.

Model:Beth. Shoot analysis

Last week I did a shoot with a model I scouted in Starbucks, Beth. The shoot was conducted in Re:So and was planned to have a photographer and stylist helping me as part of my team.

I had really high hopes for the shoot when planning as everything was in hand and organised. I had planned three looks for Beth the same as I had for the other girls, a natural look, and two more stylized looks.

The shoot sadly didn't go to plan at all how I had hoped. As I wanted to shoot in the Easter holidays all of the team who had agreed to work with me weren't available on the day so I tried to conduct the whole shoot single handed. To add to the drama of the day, I arrived at Uni to rent out a location lighting kit and they were all booked out.

So I went on to style the model, do the hair and makeup and shoot it myself using natural light. Once we began to shoot I noticed that Beth wasn't very comfortable in front of the camera, making it difficult to direct her. After showing her multiple images of pose inspiration and shot styles I had collected she got into the shoot a little bit more.

When looking over the images at the end of the shoot I decided that they were not suitable to be used in my magazine and weren't to a high enough standard that I needed. I don't feel this was all the model's fault however, I just think the shoot became very unorganized and was too much for me to take on as one person. I am not confident enough with camera technicalities and knowledge to shoot in natural light and made an informed decision to scrap the shoot.

model scouting and shoot planning

As well as shooting a lot lately I have also been organising shoots for the coming weeks and scouting my own models for them. The other week I scouted a young girl called beth in Starbucks, Southampton. I was due to shoot her Saturday just gone (Sat 16th) but after much confusion I had to cancel the shoot and it is now rescheduled for Sat 6th April instead at RE:SO. Although Beth hasn't modelled much, I am confident that she she will be very photogenic and the shoot will go according to plan. Here is a shot of her I took in Starbucks and also her Facebook profile picture. The difference betwene the two is what makes me think she will be a good model:

Second recent shoot planned:
I have also been in touch with a friend of mine who is studying fashion styling at Solent University, Lora Foulsham. She is organising a fashion show for a designer named Sarina Mantle. Sarina has showcased previous collections at London fashion week and also Graduate fashion week and has agreed to let Lora organise a show and also shoot a look book for the collection. Lora approached me and asked if I would like to be the makeup artist for the look book and also to supply the model. By doing this I can tie the shoot in with my magazine as the model will be from my agency and I can feature the images in the issue also. Another bonus for collaborating with Lora is that I can also feature a written interview with Sarina herself. I am so excited for this shoot as I have been needing a key feature in the magazine as well as just the model profiles. This will be the exact content that the magazine needs to bump it up. It will also show a strong example of the agency's client base, that a new agency has collaborated with successful designers.

Lora has sent me some of Sarina's sketches and ideas for the collection, along with some images of the makeup design she would like for the look book:

Makeup inspiration

Sarina has asked that we use an ethnic model to fit in with her collection. So I have requested a girl named Desiree Laidler to model for it.

Desiree modeled for Brighton Fashion week and is currently unsigned by any agency. Her name was passed on to me by previous director of Brighton Fashion week and friend, Bianca Richards.
I am extremely excited for the shoot, we are scheduled to shoot on Monday 8th at RE:SO in the Marlands shopping center.
